The primary functions of such management systems are to monitor hardware temperatures and power consumption, initiate boot up and shut down, and log all event states of the servers.\n\nIPMI has become an industry standard and was originally developed by Intel in cooperation with Dell, Hewlett Packard, and NEC.\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>Baseboard Management Controller (BMC)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A micro-controller that\u2019s a central and essential component of any IPMI.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Intelligent Chassis Management Bus (ICMB)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 An interface that allows communication from one chassis to another.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Intelligent Platform Management Bus (IPMB)\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Extends the BMC with management controllers while complying with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/servers\/ipmi\/ipmp-spec-v1-0.html\">IPMB communications protocol<\/a>.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>IPMI Memory\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 The IPMI\u2019s Sensor Data Record, System Event Log, Field Replaceable Units, and Repository store data.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Communications Interfaces\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 These consist of local system interfaces, serial interface, LAN interface, ICMB and PCI Management Bus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) is a set of computer interface specifications for an autonomous computer subsystem that provides management and monitoring capabilities independently of the host system&#8217;s CPU, firmware (BIOS or UEFI) and operating system.
