Today is a holiday in the United States. (So those of you with snow, just stay warm inside ~ no need to get the mail. 😉 )

Officially, the holiday is called Washington’s Birthday, to honor the first American president, George Washington. It is a federal holiday, meaning that federal employees get the day off and federal offices are closed, but it is observed differently across the US.

February 22 is Washington’s actual day of birth, but the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present.
